Scenario 2
Dear friend
As you know I am a psychology in studying and I can help you out. As psychologist I use scientific procedures to learn more of the way people think learn and feel also I use evidenced based method and interventions to assist people to surpass challenges and help their progression in performance.
Listening to music and checking Facebook while studying can affect how you study /memorising new things because when you are checking Facebook the information you just worked over will go into the sensory and short term but you are not fully committing that work into the memory. By checking Facebook you are not fully memorizing the work and it causes your brain to process it out of your memory.
There are 3 stages of memory to be able to remember things and commit memory to the long term memory. You have to go though the sensory (encoding), Sensory memory is the first phase of the memory system. In this stage the sensory information from the surroundings is saved in or memory for a very short period. For the visual information it's usually only for half-second and hearing information it's about 3 or 4 seconds. After that the short term (storage)is the second stage, short term memory can usually only store about 5 till 9 items at a time and its limited duration storage is very easily broken and the item gathered can be lost with distraction and also passing time. Finally the long term memory (Retrieval) is the last stage, the storage of long term memory could be infinite and the time limit can last all you life or a few minutes. To be able to get maximum information stored you need to go through all these stage and pay full attention to your homework.
To make things easier to memorise new work try strategies like chunking, this method helps you break things down to chunks that will make it easier to remember. E.g. by breaking down these random words in chunk F-B-I-C-A-T-C-I-A (FBI CAT CIA) it will make it much easier to remember.
At school you generally process new work as observational learning or ARRM (attention, retention, reproduction and motivation). In this process you activate your senses bring information to your brain, after this activation it get process though your senses and commits this information to your memory. If you want to remember what you just learnt you need to go over the work and rehearse it but you have a choice if you want to remember this information or not.
In the end listening to music and checking Facebook is not letting your brain properly commit what you just learnt and this can effect what you remember and your memory by not going though all the process though the right way. Also while you are checking facebook and listening to music it's hard to put all your focus into doing homework and you will find your attention drifting more towards the distractions.
