After thinking for a while Bezos just decided to sell books due to worldwide market for books, the low price for the books, and the amount of titles you could choose from. The Website debuted in July 1995 and quickly became the number one book selling website. In one month Amazon had orders from all 50 states and 45 other countries. In just four months Amazon.com became a one of the most popular websites on the Internet.
Not even into two years of operation, Amazon has gone public in May 1997 with an IPO of three million shares. With the profit from the IPO they wanted to focus of bettering the companies distribution capabilities. To ease the strain on the present distribution center, In September 1997 Amazon opened a distribution center on the east coast. There was also a seventy percent increase of the companies Seattle center.
Going into 1998 the company still continued to grow tremendous. In February the associates reached 30,000. In June it had double to 60,000 associates. The customer Database even continued to grow. It took two and a half years to reach one million sales and only 6 months after to serve two million.
The growth continues in 1999. Amazon began to offer toys and electronics. Making different stores for people to find products easier. In 2001, the company focused more on cutting costs. Amazon laid off 1,300 employees and the company also reduced business strategy costs. The strategy was highly effective with the sales that grew to $3.12 billion and was a thirteen percent increase.
Amazon in 2003 obtained CD Now. Also in 2003 they introduced Gourmet Food, Outdoor Sports Equipment and Health and Personal Care items into their product line. A huge event that happened was in 2004, Amazon Prime was released. In 2005 there was nothing introduced but they did have 100 million sales. In 2006 they introduced their online grocery store and the new unbox program where you could just download videos straight to your computer. In 2007 the first Amazon kindle was introduced which was a really big turnout for them. In 2008 Amazon purchased a few different websites. Also in 2008 they made the daily SMS messages about daily deals. In 2009 Amazon acquired Zappos for $1.2 billion, which is a major online shoe and clothing retailer. They launched Xbox live store, the new Kindle 2 that had record sales, An App for iPhones and Androids, and also the textbook trade in program. In 2010 they announced of the Amazon deals App and Amazon cloud drive. Also the Kindle DX and the Amazon Mom program were introduced. By 2011 more kindle books were bought than regular traditional books. They also made a web browser for the Kindle called Amazon Silk. Since 2012 they have partnered up with dozens of businesses for Amazon to grow even more. From working out of Jeff Bezos garage before they knew Amazon would take off to probably the most popular Internet marketplace on the web.
