In Genetics Or How You Were Raised?
Why do people make bad choices, lie, act selfish, and trick each other? Is it because they are taught to do it? Or is it in their genetics? In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain the author, shows how all of these are linked to a person's nature.
Although many people believe it is a person's upbringing to act certain ways, in Twain's book it shows that it is in fact people's nature. Tom said "Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence everyday?" This quote proves nature because Tom was never taught to lie, he was taught by Aunt Polly to be kind to others and never to lie. If Tom was never taught to do those things then it must have come from his genes, proving nature. Tom decided to "runaway and be a pirate," as stated in the book. This proved nature because Tom loves to explore and have adventures. Tom was never taught this it's just apart of his personality, which is why this example proves nature. In chapter 31 the author says, "Tom got on his knees and felt below not 20 yards away, a human hand, holding a candle, appeared from behind the rock...instantly the hand that belonged to a body, Injun Joe's!" Injun Joe is wanted by sheriff's in town, hence the reason Injun Joe ran away and hid from everyone to avoid being caught and put into jail. This is an example of nature because Injun Joe is so used to running away from the sheriff that he hid in his secret spot, the cave, it's just in his nature to run away whenever he's in trouble. "Huck Finn's wealth and the fact that he was now under the Widow Douglas protection introduced him into society - no, dragged him into it, hurled him into it - and his sufferings were almost more than he could bear," this was stated in chapter 35. All Huck's life he has had nothing, so when he suddenly became rich he couldn't handle it and he hid from everyone to go back to the way he was before, happy, which proves the theory of nature. Since he had to care for himself, Huck slept in people's hogsheads and when he suddenly became rich he got everything handed to him, Huck couldn't be the same person he was before he was rich, which made him unhappy. In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Twain stated many examples of nature, as explained in this essay.
Does someone's personality depend on their genetics or is it how they are raised? Does a person become who they are because of their surroundings and who they associate with? Or is it just in their destiny? Mark Twain showed a lot of examples of nature in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. So it all comes down to this, does a person act because of genetics or because of how they were raised?
