"DUFFs" in the book “The Duff” Essay

"DUFFs" in the book “The Duff”, 501 words essay example

Essay Topic:book

For a long time high school and middle school students have been stuck with the labels- jocks, princesses, nerds, divas, geeks, rejects, and others, but, in this book, they have branched out to even greater extents. In the book, the characters call people the "DUFFs" of the friend group, and every group has one, apparently. The DUFF stands for Designated Ugly Fat Friend, you don't necessarily have to be ugly or fat it's just an expression. In this book it's reversed, the jocks play video games, the princess and the divas take anti-depressants, and the nerds and the rejects are taking over the school. The plot of the book reminds me of my school. People seem to still be stuck with the famous but old labels that people say to be mean. In my school people are still being immature and calling people names, why can't we all just get along and be friends, well it's not that easy, people still think their so much better than others and people always say it's a "teenage girl" thing, and I know plenty of boys who are mean. The plot of the book also reminds me of my own home and family. Between my sisters and I we call each other so many names and we always get into fights about stupid stuff just like how Jess, Casey, and Bianca fight in the book and get back together again at the end of the book just like we do but our fight's last about 2 days. The main character Bianca reminds me of myself because Bianca doesn't feel pretty and neither do I at some points in life also Bianca has pretty friends and so do I, Bianca and I somewhat dress the same way and act the same way. The book and my school are similar in many ways, one way is people name call in the book and in my school, the characteristics of some of the characters is like some of my friends and family. The differences of the book and my school are my school doesn't necessarily have Populars, nerds, geeks, and rejects. We just have people who are different in a good and unique way. Another way my school and the book are different is most people get along with each other. Bianca has an assignment where she has to write an article about homecoming, but when she tries to write the article she feels very unsure on how to start it because she keeps thinking about her being the DUFF, just like me but only with the assignment and not knowing how to start it. At the end of the book Bianca, Casey, and Jess go to homecoming, when the popular girl Madison tries to break Bianca down with her labels Bianca stands up for herself and tells the popular girl Madison that her labels don't mean anything to her and she just says them for her own pleasure and maybe even because she's not happy with herself.
