Re Outstanding Commitment to Diversity in the Workplace
CONFIDENTIAL
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you, the leaders of GM, for an outstanding job for committing to diversity. As a result of this outcome, all of you have helped satisfy the legal requirements of promoting women and minorities into management positions per the 1984 agreement with the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission or otherwise commonly known as the EEOC.
Hiring a diverse workforce shows that you have exceeded expectations that will motivate and help us thrive against the competition from the Germans and Japanese manufacturers. Furthermore, developing and training these employees to value diversity and most importantly expecting them to fully cooperate and excel in designing, building and selling some of the worlds best vehicles. The employee resource groups have exceled since the creation and thus bring our employees with shared backgrounds to support one another in the company.
Our company strives to accept all individuals including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender or LGBT. There is no national law that prohibits discrimination of these individuals and by all of you accepting them makes our company stronger and united. To avoid illegal discrimination we must remember not to ask the individual any personal, religious or political question. Likewise, It would be a good idea for our company to invest in hiring applicants with physical or mental disabilities, older employees or even expecting mothers. All of these individuals may have knowledge in a certain area that would be a valuable asset to our company.
The biggest way for our company to avoid illegal discrimination would to be monitor any and all employee communication activity. Likewise, documentation is important and if an employee files a complaint the investigation should be immediate but in a consistent manner. The more detailed the report the better action and response will occur and ultimately a decision will be made. However, termination should not be immediate and the investigation should be thorough enough to come to a conclusion and to decide if the employee should be terminated or given a second chance depending on the level of severity of the discrimination. Furthermore, if termination or any legal actions is required then it will occur in a timely manner since time will be of the essence.
I believe another great idea for our company would be to host an annual training course for all employees regarding diversity and how it influences the work environment. This will give employees the time to share and present information related to diversity.
Again, I want to congratulate you all on an outstanding job at diversity commitment, and appreciate you for your part in the continuing success of General Motors. This would not be possible without the hard work of all our employees, most importantly our great leaders.
