The GCSE maths courses are suitable to anyone that did not achieve a grade C already or if you already have a grade C and you need a higher grade for example to progress to higher education. The purpose of the course is designed to help people progress in their careers, progress to universities, etc.
Maths remains one of the most important subjects for employers and higher education and having a pass at grade C or better is crucial for a vast number of jobs and further and higher education courses.
Learners should be aware that mathematics can be used in real life situations and help them with daily things such as shopping, redecorating, baking, etc. They should develop positive attitude towards mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.
In February 2013 the former Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, asked Ofqual to implement changes leading to new GCSEs. The new reformed GCSE mathematics which started this year in September demands deeper and broader mathematical understanding. Provides all learners with a greater coverage of key areas such as ratio and proportions. It is definitely more demanding than in the past years and will provide greater challenge even for the most able learner. The new changes focus on ensuring every learner achieves the level that is required for further education and future careers.
New changes are applied to assessment criteria as well with the first exams due in June 2017.
The Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government implemented a new plan for strengthening English and Maths in post16 education, increasing uptake of reformed GCSEs in these subjects.
In the Further Education Workforce Strategy set out by the coalition they say they are trying to meet the skills needs of tomorrow and try to give people the right skills.
In the past few years the government invested more money in training and development for maths teachers in order to increase the national maths level. This included
recruitment of maths specialists into teaching
initial training of maths teachers and converting existing teachers into maths
coordinating and delivering a wide range of maths continuing professional development (CPD) and schooltoschool support
ensuring maths leadership is developed, eg running a programme for aspiring heads of maths departments
helping maths enrichment programmes to reach a large number of pupils from primary school onwards
The reforms proposed by the coalition included a rigorous curriculum with an increased challenge starting in primary schools. The curriculum focuses on the basics in primary so pupils can progress and achieve greater success at secondary.
The reformed GCSE had been set up in order to support any young person without a good pass at GCSE at age 16 to achieve this.
From the 2014/2015 academic year the requirement for students without A* C in maths and English is to study towards this until is achieved and government will be funding the course, the funding is a condition.
