Competition among species plays an important role in ecological regulation. Interference (or contest) competition and exploitation (or scramble) competition. Interference competition occurs when the dominant species keeps its competition away from a resource. Scramble describes a situation in which a population depletes a resource making it less available to its competition.

Seasonal cycles begin when light increases in the spring and cause higher surface temperatures, which result in increased metabolism and growth rates of organisms. Short  term increases in production occur during summer when ocean layers are mixed by methodical events, tides in estuaries, or upwelling of colder water.
