The artist I have chosen is the painter Pablo Picasso. He was born on October twenty-fifth, 1881 in Malaga, Spain and died on April eighth,1973 in Mougins, France. He was considered to be "radical in his work" and was the creator of Cubism. His father was an art teacher and a painter, and had taught Picasso to paint and sketch. Picasso was a very poor student, but had always shown his love and talent for drawing. He soon grew bored of school and chose to draw in his notebook instead. When he was fourteen, his family moved to Barcelona, Spain, and "applied to the city's prestigious School of Fine Arts." While he miraculously got in, he was bored with the tedious classes and often skipped class. He moved again when he was sixteen, to Madrid, and enrolled in another art school the Royal Academy of San Fernando. Yet again, he was bored of his classes and viewed them as being elementary level. For a few years, he painted the people he observed "gypsies, beggars and prostitutes, among other things."
In 1899, Picasso decided to move back to the city of Barcelona and "fell into a crowd of artist and intellectuals." He was inspired to break away from the normal, classical methods of art and decided to move to Paris, France at the beginning of the twentieth century where he began his "Blue Period," which lasted from 1901 to 1904. After the death of a close friend, Picasso slipped into a period of depression and "painted scenes of poverty, isolation, and anguish."
He finally beat his depression in 1905 and was "madly in love with a beautiful model, Fernande Olivier." Picasso's work began to show softer colors, such as, "beiges, pinks, and reds" instead of his normal, depressing colors. In 1907, he had created Cubism, with nude prostitutes being his influence. From Cubism, he constructed Surrealism.
One of his more famous works is the painting "Guernica" (1937). The painting contains his most powerful feeling towards any subject. He painted it as a reaction to the bombing of the town of Guernica in the midst of the Spanish Civil War. The city of Guernica is a small town in the "province of Biscay in Basque Country." The painting depicts the bombing as a horrific tragedy, and the pain and suffering of the town's residents. It has become a reminder of the horrible day and of the residents' losses. The medium Picasso chose was Cubism the people do not appear to be normal, but are symbols for the travesty that occurred in Guernica.
Another one of Picasso's famous works is "The Weeping Woman" (1937). In continuation of his previous and aforementioned painting "Guernica," Picasso depicts a woman sobbing. The painting, much like "Guernica", was created in the medium of Cubism. The woman herself was said to be Picasso's mistress, Dora Maar. The image of the woman does not appear like a normal human woman, but shapes and odd colors make up the mournful female.
