Depression as a cause of suicide among teenagers and young adults Essay
Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults. The rate of suicides and suicide attempts increases from time to time. For some, suicide is the permanent solution to a temporary problemand most pressing public health issues across the world suicides case is so often these days even becoming a trend and we are so used to the stories that we barely even flinch anymore. Brener, Hassan, and Barrios (1999) analyzed data from the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey and found that 10% of students reported considering suicide in the previous 12 months. The depression and substances abuse for teenagers are higher and they cannot adapt with that situation. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services(2010), at least 90 percents of all people who commit suicide suffer from one or more mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and alcoholism. Teenagers commit suicide because they cannot cope with the stress related matter such as depression and substances abuse, but counseling session, reading and watching films, and also highest attention from parents can reduce the number of suicide from increasing day by day.
The first causes that cause teenagers to attempt suicide are depression. Depression is one part of a large role in suicide. Teenagers sometimes had a period of depressing. They are usually stressed over something, such as some of them witnessing the pressure that was coming from all around their surroundings. The difficulty suicidal people have imagining a solution to their suffering is due in part to the distorted thinking caused by depression. The unimaginable pain the person is going to lead them to take their own life with frustration. A person with depression usually has different thoughts as a healthy person. This chemical imbalance can lead to the teenagers to attempt suicide in order to help them relieve their suffering. Many people who suffer from depression always feel like they have lost the ability to remember a happy past and imagine a happy future. Schwartz & Friedman (2009) According to Stephenson ( 2006 ) ,'The depression and hopelessness appear to have the highest association with suicide ideation and behaviour'. Depression have a lot of factors but the depression related to family history, friends (bullying), fail in relationship and students with the pressure in the study are the most crucial and give huge impact. Cerel , Bolin & Moore(2013) claim that the most common reasons for suicide attempts in that study included financial concerns, relationship concerns, hopelessness, anxiety family problems, depression and stress about school. People surrounding might judge teen's family carelessly without investigate first. Not only the family but all people are get affected by the suicide problem but the impact of suicide often extends to include a wide array of 'suicide survivors' beyond family members. On a college campus, it is likely that a suicide or suicide attempt could have a profound effect on roommates, hall-mates, fraternity/sorority members, fellow classmates, counseling center staff, and faculty (Cerel, Bolin & Moore,2013).
