Oxygen is one of the most important elements in the world. Without oxygen water wouldn't exist and most drinking products wouldn't exist. Life as we know it wouldn't exist everything in the world needs oxygen. Plants need Oxygen to grow animals need Oxygen to live. A lot of things in the world have oxygen like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, etc. The way oxygen is made is through photosynthesis which happens when a plant takes in sunlight and carbon dioxide to make oxygen. The person who discovered oxygen was Carl Wilhelm Scheele in the year 1773. But he wasn't the only one who discovered it Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier in two separate years of course. Priestley discovered oxygen in the year of 1774 and Lavoisier in 1777. Oxygen can be toxic sometimes like when you go deep water scuba diving because of the elevated partial pressures. Some symptoms of oxygen toxicity are seizures, eye bleeding, fibrosis, coughing, lung pain, and muscle twitching and more. Those are some of many things oxygen does other than give life. It can potentially take it as well when chemically combined with other elements like for example HO (Hydrogen peroxide) drink some of that and you are dead. It might not seem that bad because it has one more oxygen atom but it really is dangerous. The reason for that being is that it is it can explode if heated and can cause burns if it comes to contact with skin. So when your friend asks for HO never say you want HO because the results won't end well.(chemistry joke) After scaring you a little I'm going to lighten up the mood by giving you some fun facts of oxygen. Like did you know oxygen makes up to 21% of the Earth's Atmosphere. Also did you know that the earth has been oxygenated for 2.3 to 2.4 billion years but levels started to creep up at least 2.4 billion years ago according to NASA back in 2007. Also did you know that has a melting point well it is minus 361.82degreesF (minus 218.79degreesC). If it has a melting point it must have a boiling point and it is minus 297.31degreesF (minus 182.95degreesC). Also another fun fact oxygen makes up of the mass of a human body. Another fun fact oxygen can come in liquid form and gas form. Oxygen is a very reactive element so that it easily makes compounds like oxides. Oxygen is the most common element in the Earth's crust but third in the universe. Also oxygen is an oxidizer in rocket fuel. Now this is the part where all the boring stuff from class comes in. Like how oxygen's symbol is an O and atomic number is 8. Also that it is in group 16 and period 2 and its non metal. It is also a proud and honorary member of the chalcogen group.
