Summary of Chapter 3 of “To kill a Mockingbird Atticus” Essay
In chapter 3 of To kill a Mockingbird Atticus proves how he has exemplary behavior by giving Scout a wise lecture. Scout got herself in a predicament at school since she can already read and she is different than the other children. So Atticus says to Scout "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view [] until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This advice from Atticus to his daughter is supposed to help her understand that you should be sympathetic to others because you don't know what they are going through until you put yourself in their position. Another quote that proves Atticus' good parenting skills is "When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em." This quote from chapter 9 demonstrates Atticus giving Jack wise parenting skills on raising young children.
During this time period in Maycomb County segregation led to whites treating the African American's very harshly, so Atticus has to teach his children to be different. In continuation, whenever Scout asks her father if he is a "Ni**er-lover" he responds with "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I'm hard put, sometimes-baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you." This quote from chapter 11 proves how Atticus is not prejudice and wants to set a good example to his children. Another quote that has a similar concept to this is "As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it - whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash." This quote from chapter 23 also shows Atticus giving his children a lesson on segregation and how it is dishonorable.
Atticus also demonstrates his wise words and moral ways in court while defending Tom Robinson an African American man. The quote "She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards." from chapter 20 validates how Mayella Ewell is guilty for tempting and kissing Tom Robinson. Additionally the quote Shows Atticus explaining that white men can also commit a crime like this so it's not fair to say that Tom Robinson committed that crime because he is African American.
