What is the Purpose of Tattoos? Essay

A tattoo is a form of body modification that is done by piercing and inserting ink into the upper layer of skin to make a design in a different color. Tattoos can be Traumatic also known as Natural tattoos which are a result of asphalt through road injuries or lead pencils. The other form is Amateur and Professional ones which are made by using traditional techniques and modern tattoos machines. The symbolization and impact of tattoos vary in different areas and cultures. Tattoos may serve as a mark of status and rank, spiritual devotion, sexual lure, pledges of love and punishment, amulets and talismans, slaves and convicts etc. in the past people also have been forcibly tattooed like in Nazi concentration camps etc.
After interviewing many friends one thing was concluded that most of the time, tattoos are basically a symbol of some story that is waiting to be told. Their colors, shapes and symbols pulsate with memories, emotions and meanings. To be more specific, body art basically captures and reveals unspoken aspects of human relationships, both about the past and present. While some of the tattoos represent overt religious expressions, most relate to feelings of love and expressions for either departed or deceased family member, a boyfriend or girlfriend, or any close friend. For example, one of the friends had tattoos of his grandparents who were departed. Another friend's opinion was that sometimes I am so passionate about something that I feel it worthy enough to be with me forever. Image is the way that I can portray the meaning in its best way and when it's tattooed I feel being accomplished. I think of the journeys that lead me toward getting that tattoo and every time I look at it, I relive those moments.
Another one has image of an anchor as a tattoo and he thinks that it symbolizes strength, stability, something that holds you in place no matter how rough things can get. He thinks that seeing this tattoo gives him strength when things go tough. One had an angel tattoo which in his opinion expressed love for God and his firm belief in his religion. He thinks that religion is the most important thing in his life and this reflects in his character as well. On had an eagle tattoo and in his perception freedom is the most important thing in his life and he thinks that this shows freedom.
After going through all this activity, one thing was concluded that people try to depict their feelings in the form of tattoos. Out of the many reasons that people get tattoos, the most imperative one that connect all the reasons is the past experience of a person. These experiences can either be positive or negative. Their vulnerability and dependence on tattoos is dependent on their personality which is molded by their past. They think that they can get motivated, they can link the past to present and they can also memorize the precious moments by these.
