How does my career benet the environment?
I major in remote sensing courses in the institute of resources and environment and naturally I will engage in environmental area. Briey introduced from Wikipedia, "remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object and thus in contrast to on site observation." Using satellites or radar, we will understand the earth. Remote sensing can do climate change studies, environmental issues and natural resource studies and so on.
When it comes to the benets my career does to the environment, I can say it would be a great many. Nevertheless, my study area lay the dierent level with respect to environmental protection in the public eye, which relates to a lot of eorts on publicity, emission reduction, etc. We provide government or environmental protection administra-tion with the signicant spatial data and analysis on earth surface studied. even if my career doesn't benet the environment directly. Jan de Leeuw(2010) said that remote sensing contributed primarily to the identication of environmental problems and policy implementation.
Three main point are introduced to account for how my career does benecial to environment. Firstly, land cover mapping is an eective tool to visualize remote sens-ing data acquired, intuitively, some rather serious and implicit things will be discovered. Then, we interpret several surface features of areas of interest for further study, such as exploring the reason of water and soil loss, ooding, earthquake and even predicting that. Secondly, representative factors will be rened from mapping information. In terms of environmental problems in urban, social and economic factors, including air pollution, water pollution which arise seriously with the increasing residents' living standard. Be-sides, considering biological factors, the phenomenon that the less urban green land cover,
and the more built-up areas, becomes more and more common. Without mapping infor-mation in the previous point, we cannot achieve these useful factors, supporting governs of environment to take better measures. Finally, synthesizing above two points, we build the model in specic methods to solve environmental problem. Furthermore, processing or monitoring applications will be developed to help related departments or policy.
The global warming has been a big matter, and we cannot escape from reality. Ac-cording to research disscussed on the website of Greenfacts, "if the currently planned actions are not fully implemented, a warming of 4C could occur as early as the 2060s."
I think there is no more severe than that fact, so it is responsible for us in environmental area to make enough eorts, and to make problem clear. In this scientic way, we can unite people to protect environment and enable a sustainable future.
