Empirical Knowledge was used on Child X for her operative care. Phillips (2013) wrote that perioperative patient care requires developing a plan of care and identifying expected outcomes through the nursing process (p. 28). Assessment was obtained from the ER nurse notes and verified upon admission to the holding area. Nursing diagnoses were obtained, identification of outcomes and explaining expectations were done, and the planned surgical intervention aside from medical interventions to solve the problem was about to happen. The surgical procedure was implemented successfully and post surgical evaluation was performed with added interventions made to meet both short term and long term needs of the patient and her family. Also, Rothrock (2007) stipulated that the safety and welfare of patients during surgical interventions are primary concerns of members of the surgical team (p. 15). By making Child X safe and comfortable, we made sure that safety belt was placed, proper positioning was done, cushions on bony prominences were placed, and warm blankets were used to keep body temperature normal on a cold environment. The staff nurse was present during induction of anesthesia and final check was done to make sure the right procedure was done on the right patient.
Esthetic Knowledge, the art of nursing (McEwen & Wells, 2014, p. 13), is the heart of nursing care. In any surgical cases, whatever the condition of the patient be, nurses combine care with feelings and agreement without sense of judgment. In Child X case, interviewing both the patient and the mother to gather socioeconomic background and obtain answers to questions about the patient's situation was done without giving conclusive words and comments. The surgical procedure was done without blaming the family of the untoward effects of their hard living to Child X and her other siblings. Family teaching was done to give enlightenment about the patient's situation and how to improve health. Short term assistant was extended and long term goal was brought to the attention of respective department of the health care system.
Personal Knowledge was applied while taking care of Child X. Reflective behavior greatly impacted me as I dealt with her and my other future patients. My attitude of care is not selective, it is not looking at the person's status in the community, nor is reflective of the personal appearance but it is God centered. Believing that the great One above is honored as we give our utmost attention to our care recipients. Taking care of Child X and her family holistically was also part of our spiritual service to the Lord.
