The role of religion in the colonies, 536 words essay example

Essay Topic:religion

Religion played a tremendous role in the colonies because it aided the establishement of abounding colonies that are still present today, and created a pathway to a new world. In the early years of what later would become America, many religious groups played a persuasive role in each of the British colonies, and would lead many to attempt to enforce a strict religious formality through both colony governments and local town rules. Many laws were created that mandated that everyone will attend a house of worship and pay taxes that funded the salaries of their local ministers.Religion served as the main motive towards the establishment of English colonies in North America.
Colonies were either developed as economic ventures, grants for the monarch or to escape religious persecutionstherefore, religion played the most critical role in specific colonies.Plymouth,Massachusetts Bay,and Maryland were just a few of the colonies that showed that religion was very important to their way of life. These colonies were established in order to create a culture of religious unity. For example,Maryland was founded in 1634 in order to create a safe haven for Catholics to freely practice Catholicism.Simiraly,Plymouth was founded in order for Puritans to escape religious persecutions in 1623 brought upon them by England's churches.
The Pilgrim Puritans encountered religious persecution in England which soon lead them to flee to Hollandalthough, the Pilgrims sailed they instead landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Puritans may have disagreed with the church's teachings in England, and did not want to change to their views in order to be seen as politically correct in England's eyeshowever, the Puritans did not wish to separate from the church, but rather reform it in order to create a Godly image for others to soon follow.John Wintrop was the first to govern the Massachusetts Bay colony, and encouraged his fellow Puritans to follow his "Model Of Christian Charity" in order to acheive a Godly image.
The Massachusetts Bay colony may have been brought up by fervent church, but they needed more than just a Church to strive for survival.Puritans believed in a doctrine called the Predestination which holds God to be a powerful, and to have a vast amount of knowledge about everything and anything in the worldtherefore, the fate of everyone has been authorized without their acknowledgement, even before they were brought into this world. In a way the early English colonies were unaware of their new surroundings, and needed time in order to readjust. The church was a symbol of hope to the English colonies,so that they would find the courage to survive in their home.A majority of the colonists would soon believe that their feverent church would be the only necessity they'll ever need in order to survive in the end,but they were inaccurate in the end.I believe John Wintrop's writing"City Upon a Hill" was trying to say that the church may have brought everyone together, yet they weren't able to see the true meaning behind it all.The feverent church brought everyone together in order to ensure their survival because they would need one another's assist to endure any obstacle that would their way.
